Ahead of marking his sixth anniversary at the helm, Mikel Arteta has made it clear that his continued role with the club is fundamentally dependent to achieving success.

The Journey So Far: The Arteta Era

The Spanish coach took over on December 20th, 2019 and managed to steer the team to an FA Cup triumph a short time later. Yet, that initial silverware remains his sole significant piece of silverware after taking over from Unai Emery.

“Yes,” Arteta responded in response to a query about staying beyond 2027. “But it’s about today. And numerous factors must occur in the coming months as well to deserve that opportunity.”

This weekend sees the six-year milestone with a game facing Everton, the very same club Arsenal played immediately following his hiring was confirmed.

Present Challenges

As second-placed Manchester City set to face West Ham in an earlier kick-off, Arsenal face being knocked off top spot in the Premier League for the first time. This situation arises even with Arteta managing a squad that has endured more than a century of fitness issues over the course of last season.

He is tied down by 18 months remaining on the contract he inked in 2024, yet understands fully that he must deliver in the immediate future.

Survival in the Job

Arteta elaborated, emphasizing the daily requirement to justify his role. “In my view a manager must deserve the right to be here tomorrow. And that is determined by how you react, how you talk here, how you go into the dressing room, the message you convey.”

Arteta continued, commending the strong backing from the club's ownership, while singling out the team's buy-in as the key factor. “In the final analysis, the critical component are those players... During my tenure, I’ve seen just players with a degree of commitment, willingness to improve and dedicate themselves to the team.”

Injury Concerns

The squad faces the weekend fixture coping with a fresh setback. Defender Ben White has been ruled out with a strain that is expected to see him miss action for the coming weeks.

Evolved Priorities

Despite the fitness woes and the high-stakes environment, Arteta is confident the club's “focus and dialogue” are vastly different from when he initially took over.

Arteta highlighted the team's performances as evidence of progress. “Consider the performances, all the records that we... were breaking... We still haven't been able to do that [win trophies]. But that shows the standard we operate at.”

In closing, the manager stated, “That is a level that the Premier League has not seen before in the past. And we want to achieve more lofty ambitions. And if we do that, I think we are on the proper course to winning.”
