According to figures from Israel, at least 98 Palestinians have died while detained starting from October 2023. A human rights group based in Israel has indicated that the true toll is probably significantly larger, as a result of numerous of disappeared individuals from Gaza.

Some deaths in custody have been high profile, such as a 50-year-old medical chief who died in detention after a third of a year in confinement.

An inmate incarcerated with the individual testified that he was led to the yard by correctional officers shortly before his demise, visibly injured and unclothed from the lower body. His corpse has not been repatriated to Gaza.

Additional detainees who died in detention in Israel remain anonymous. Detention administrators and armed services supplied researchers with the figure of deaths in detention, and limited further data including the location where they perished, but excluding the inmates’ personal details.
