Spooks – I Spy Apocalypse from 2003
The show kicks off with the Spooks team confined while undergoing a drill relating to a hypothetical terrorist attack, overseen by two Home Office officials. As things progress, it seems an actual attack has occurred with a chemical weapon released. The anxiety increases as messages indicate a catastrophe taking place outside, and escalates as the boss appears to be infected, and the government agents endeavor to depart, forcing Matthew Macfadyen’s character to choose between firing at them or allowing them to leave and endangering the sterile MI5 environment. Given it’s Spooks, the outcome is expected.
The 1984 production Threads
Threads had minimal funding but arguably the most terrifying series I’ve ever seen because of the stark reality and bleak government data. Saw it not long ago after seeing the first airing; I frequently went to the Sheffield pub from the programme that highlighted the truth and the glib matter-of-fact official information that were transmitted. Still absolutely terrifying decades on.
The 2022 Severance episode The We We Are
The season one finale of Severance has to be right up there as a tense chapter. I spent the entire episode literally perched nervously, straining every sinew with Dylan to hold the switches that sustained the Innies’ extended time, while yelling at the Innies to get their truths out there. The final climactic moment – “she survives!” – was like an eruption.
Industry – White Mischief (2024)
The fifth episode of Industry’s third season had my heart racing. I needed to stop and stand and leave the room several times because of the sheer scale of the reckless self-harm I was witnessing. Rishi Ramdani faces serious trouble at work and home – up to his eyeballs in debt to loan sharks because of his compulsive gambling, assuming hazardous chances on a wager involving sterling which could lose his company millions. Inevitably, he starts a gaming binge, consumes excessive substances and alcohol and alternates between success and failure, gets beaten to a pulp. Every time you think the situation cannot deteriorate further, it deteriorates. There’s hope of redemption at the end of the episode but he squanders the opportunity, resulting in dreadful effects in the concluding part of the season. Absolutely had to relax following that!
The 2007 Peep Show episode Holiday
Peep Show is not inherently a tense series. But the episode Holiday features such degrees of awkwardness that it can cause you to stand for the full show, riddled with anxiety. The tension escalates when Jeremy and Mark realize being compelled to falsify about the canine they by chance collide with and subsequent attempts to dispose of it. You then spend the rest of the episode wondering if it might be more awful than cremation, and it turns out to be!
The 2001 The West Wing episode The Two Cathedrals
Nothing I’ve watched has been more intense compared to my initial viewing the concluding episode of The West Wing’s second season. The installment begins with the consequences of the demise (in a car crash) of the president’s confidential aide and escalates to a高潮 with a situation in Haiti, and the repercussions of the secrecy of the president’s MS diagnosis, with confirmation of his intention to seek re-election. Superb programming. Unsurpassed.
The 2018 Bodyguard premiere episode
The beginning of the UK show Bodyguard, with the protagonist on a train alongside his juvenile boy, is personally a top tense installment. He notices a Muslim female heading to the toilet and senses something is wrong. The bomb diffuser experts are called, enter the train, and endeavor to coax the woman to discard her bomb jacket. Tension escalates to an almost unbearable degree, until, indeed, the vest is disarmed.
The 2001 Buffy episode The Body
Buffy comes into her home to realize her mom has deceased of natural causes, which is the most unusual type of death in this paranormal series. The show features no musical score, a sullen tone, and we see the episode through the experience of Buffy’s shock of discovering her mother.
The Sopranos – Made in America from 2007
The ultimate sequence of the series finale of the program was incredibly anxious. And if you viewed it when it first premiered, you – at the start – didn’t understand the cause. Tony’s foes, genuine and fictional, had all been defeated. Surely this has the feel of the season one ending? “Think about the small elements.” But the mood is bizarrely ominous. Nearly Twin Peaks-like fear. The family gathers in a diner. Meadow parks. Tony gloomily informs Carmela difficulties are arising with an additional associate working with the government. Meadow parks the vehicle. Odd persons arrive at the eatery. Gaze at Tony(?) Meadow is parking. Tony plays a track on the music machine. Meadow finds a spot. The bell rings, someone enters the restaurant. Can’t be Meadow, she’s still parking. Tony raises his gaze. Continue. It stops. My spirit fell about 20 minutes later.
The 2016 The Walking Dead episode The Last Day on Earth
I remained awake to view this installment during the night. It was incredibly tense following the introduction of villain Negan discovering the characters, cruelly taunting his victims and then leaving the victim unknown (concluded with a suspenseful moment).
