Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Incident

New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and believes the player will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York early Sunday morning.

Glenn described that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “upbeat” during their latest talk.

“That gives me comfort, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn commented. “His family, they are doing well and he is expected to recover fully.”

Glenn was unsure when Boyd could be discharged the medical facility, where he is reported as in critical but steady condition.

“Not certain at the moment,” Glenn remarked. “Yet I must mention, just talking to him, he felt really upbeat. Once more, that puts my mind at ease, because of his outlook and he expresses himself so positively.”

New York police released surveillance images earlier this week of a suspect in the attack on the player. The reason behind the incident is still being looked into and police mentioned it is unknown if Boyd was targeted. No other injuries were reported.

The attack took place around 2 a.m. on Sunday in the area between MSG and the iconic square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was admitted to a local hospital after suffering a wound to the stomach, as reported. The perpetrator got away.

Glenn shared Boyd has been in his thoughts “constantly” since the news broke. Glenn added that Boyd and his wife just had a newborn.

“What immediately crossed my mind, he recently became a father,” Glenn noted. “I thought of his spouse, I’m thinking about his kid and I want to make sure that he’s OK. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“There’s a process to this, I’ll keep private, but It is reassuring that he will recover excellently.”

Boyd was inactive in the present campaign, his first with the Jets, after his season was cut short due to injury on mid-August with an injury to his shoulder that required surgery.

He signed with New York as a free agent in spring and was expected to be a key part of a revamped special teams unit under Glenn and special teams coordinator the special teams coach. But Boyd was injured during preseason drills on August 2 and had to be helped off.

Boyd has remained around the team all season long while recovering from the shoulder injury.

“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn said. “In fact, he attends every game. His commitment is total. Given his status as a special teams standout, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”

Boyd, from Texas, played his first four seasons with the Vikings after getting drafted in the seventh round by the Vikings out of the University of Texas in 2019. He signed with the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and moved to Houston’s squad subsequently. Boyd signed a one-year contract for $1.6 million with the Jets in March.
