Boxing is in a notable downturn this period, with a scarcity of big events and far less engaging contests than typical. The anticipation of a serious and intriguing heavyweight contest between Joseph Parker and Wardley at the iconic O₂ Arena offers a welcome respite to the struggling sport. The quiet attraction of both men is enhanced by the fact that they now find themselves at the brink of a world title shot. Yet each has weaknesses. This is Parker's fortieth professional bout and, excluding three defeats, he has been knocked down on several occasions by multiple challengers. He consistently rises but Wardley hits harder than anyone he has faced – with the exception of Wilder who looked a shell of a devastating finisher when Parker swept to a one-sided points victory in late 2023.

Wardley, a former white-collar slugger, who only took up boxing when he was twenty, had zero amateur background and has always had to overcome doubts about his comparatively limited skills. But he is similarly close to a world title challenge.

“This is the most important contest, at the moment, in the heavyweight class. These two guys have accepted the challenge when neither of them needed to make this fight. Joe Parker is the interim WBO titleholder and they have formally instructed Usyk to fight him, but the Ukrainian was hurt. Joseph insists on fighting.

“Fabio is also in an excellent situation and he could have just waited for his chance. He said ‘No, thanks.’ He chose to box – and versus Parker because it provides him a shot to accelerate his path.”

Parker’s Perspective

Parker, aging 34 soon, said: “This is do or die. I am not focused on a loss. I respect my opponent and his achievements and how he has prepared for this fight. But I am on a higher plane and I am intending to prove it on fight night.”

The Perspective of Wardley

Wardley will be 31 in December, and he said: “It is a massive night for the two of us. It is clearly the most significant bout of my career and the most important fight ever. But each time I rise to the occasion I elevate my performance. The upcoming fight will be no different. The gap between Parker's level and where people think I am has been a common theme in my boxing life.

“He has been going around the block for a considerable period, with a numerous contests on his resume. By no means is he an aged fighter but he has been in the game for a while and had several tough bouts. I've also endured brutal fights and I realize they cause wear and tear. He has been in a significantly more of those than me.”

But the lingering doubt persists that Parker is likely to be too experienced, and too skilled, for his opponent. He is expected to triumph a bruising battle with the conviction that he is the prime candidate for Usyk – currently the top heavyweight globally by a clear gap.
