New York Launches Online Platform for Public to Report Immigration Videos Following Detentions of 4 American Citizens
The state attorney general has launched a recent digital platform encouraging locals to submit images and footage of federal immigration enforcement throughout New York. This move follows a shortly after a high-profile enforcement action disrupted Manhattan's Chinatown, triggering widespread demonstrations.
US Citizens Arrested In Enforcement Action
A congressional representative revealed during a Wednesday press conference that four American citizens were detained and detained for "almost a full day" after the previous day's operation. Protests occurred in New York on both Tuesday and Wednesday.
"Every New Yorker is entitled to exist without intimidation," the attorney general wrote in a release.
"Anyone who observed and captured federal operations yesterday, I ask you to provide that material with us. We are dedicated to reviewing these submissions and evaluating any violations of law."
Portal Features
The platform provides options to send visual evidence of the incident, plus a section to indicate geographic details. Before submitting, users must mark a checkbox that states that "the attorney general might employ any documents, photographs, or videos in a legal proceeding, including in a legal proceeding or government document."
Details of the ICE Action
The Chinatown raid, which witnesses say included dozens of government officers, occurred in a popular neighborhood of the city where fake purses, items, goods and other goods are commonly traded en masse – typically to visitors.
Recordings of the operation show multiple masked and armed officers zip-tying and detaining a individual, and shoving away witnesses. Throngs of residents pursued the officers through the streets. An armored truck was also seen moving along the Manhattan avenues.
Official Reactions
In a Wednesday press conference featuring the rights organization, the congressman, a lawmaker, said that four US citizens were taken by federal agents for nearly 24 hours and that there were "no situations where nationals should be taken for unjustly." He said the citizens were let go on the following day with no legal action taken.
"The intent is obvious here. It is not focused on deporting lawbreakers," Goldman remarked. "This represents a militarized effort to create conflict. It is purely a excuse to provoke conflict for the government to bring in the troops to prevent conflict that they themselves caused."
Widespread Condemnation
Fury over the ICE raid rapidly grew – every NYC mayor hopefuls condemned the incident, along with Governor Kathy Hochul.
"Yet again, the federal government selects authoritarian theatrics that create fear, not safety. It must stop," one mayoral candidate declared.
The city's advocacy organizations voiced concern as well.
"Federal officers descended on the neighborhood with armored transports, hooded officers and tactical gear to go after street vendors attempting to earn income. This raid had no connection to citizen protection and focused completely on intimidating residents and areas," said the head of a rights organization.
Official Guidelines
Official guidelines prohibits the holding of citizens and the agency has claimed it will not take into custody citizens. However, independent reporting has revealed that over 170 US citizens have been held against their will by ICE since the start of the current administration.
Current Situation
Enforcement actions have been becoming more common in NY and around the country this year.
A recent action in central NYC was the earliest reported action on an refuge facility of the current administration. Protests opposing immigration enforcement are ubiquitous including accusations of violence and abusive practices.
Recently, a submission filed by civil rights groups claimed healthcare failures of women with child in detention centers.
