The Golden State is Fully Drought-Free for the First Time in 25 Years.

Following 25 long years, every region of California is enduring drought conditions. This landmark event follows grueling years marked by a lack of precipitation that exacerbated fire dangers and strained its enormous farming industry.

A Chart Indicates Zero Abnormally Dry Areas

Thursday's report from the national drought tracker confirmed that California in its entirety is free from dry or drought conditions. This change was driven by a period of significant storms that topped up major reservoirs like Shasta and Oroville far beyond their long-term norms.

“To those aged 25 and below you’ve spent your life in a world where California has been grappling with drought,” noted a local meteorologist.

From Intense Storms to Rainy Seasons

Achieving this status included severe and lethal winter storms that battered the state in the not-too-distant past, leading to widespread flooding, power outages, and deaths. While those storms started to mitigate the drought, they weren't enough to erase it completely.

As late as late December, regions like northeastern California were considered unusually parched. Substantial precipitation at the start of the new year eliminated those remaining dry spots.

Essential Mountain Snowfall Presents a Challenge

Yet, experts warn that drought-free conditions should not be confused with being out of the woods. Recent measurements of the high-elevation snow indicate it is roughly seven-tenths of the typical level.

This mountain snow, which provides about a third of the state's water as it melts in the spring, is a key piece for the year ahead. Water officials point out that it is premature to determine the outlook for the annual water supply.

“The current pattern right now is increased rainfall over snowfall,” said a state water resources manager. “The goal is the snow accumulation to pick up by 1 April so that we’re approaching the typical mark.”

While the drought map is entirely green, attention turns to preserving this positive water situation throughout the months to come.
