The Reason Los Blancos Possess 'Complete Confidence' in Youngster Thiago Pitarch
When an 18-year-old makes Real Madrid history in a pivotal Champions League match against City, it naturally attracts praise and the spotlight.
During his first start in the tournament - and fifth appearance for the team - the young midfielder made a strong impression as the fifteen-time European champions claimed a three-nil last-16 first-leg lead at the Santiago Bernabeu.
The teenager, who also made his Real debut in the play-off round a few weeks prior with a substitute appearance at Benfica, then helped the Madrid side overcome the English Premier League side in the midweek return to secure a last eight berth.
Aged 18 years old, the midfielder became the team's youngest player to start twice in the Champions League's latter rounds, surpassing Brazil forward Vini Jr's record by a week and a half.
A Meteoric Rise Through La Fabrica
This talent is the latest to come through from the club's academy and is quickly establishing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most promising protegees.
He signed for Real from CD Leganes in 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico Madrid and Getafe's youth teams, and starting out for the Juvenil C team, where he quickly made a strong impression.
He worked his way up to the reserve side and it was in a pre-season game in which they faced the academy's first team, then managed by the former defender, where the youngster is said to have caught the attention of the present manager, who replaced Xabi Alonso in January.
Reports would later label the moment as "love at first sight," adding Pitarch stood out not only for his skill on the ball, but for the vitality, personality and determination he added to the side.
'His Best Attribute Is His Character'
During the pre-season of 2025, former boss Xabi Alonso called up Pitarch to train with the first team and gave him minutes in the warm-up matches.
However, it was Arbeloa's appointment that became the defining moment in his development as he came on as a second-half replacement in both ties against the Portuguese side that set up the clash with Pep Guardiola's team.
"I've dreamed of this each night when sleeping, the first day I started playing football, every day you head to training and every day you have a game," said the player following his first appearance.
"I have just achieved my ambition with the best team in the planet and in the best competition."
Given a first start in the Spanish league against Getafe - where he was for four years after arriving from Atletico in 2018 - he has kept his place for the following four as fitness issues to Jude Bellingham and Dani Ceballos created an opportunity.
Pitarch has taken it with displays that have defied his youth and inexperience.
"He is a extremely fast player, and you can see his capabilities," said Arbeloa. "He's incredibly energetic, with excellent stamina, effort and mobility."
Pitarch's mentality has also stood out to his coach.
"His standout trait is his character," added he. "He constantly demands the ball, and even under pressure, he remains unfazed.
"I realize people are astonished to see him start in a European fixture, but he's playing because I had total confidence in him to perform his normal game.
"Thiago will continue to get opportunities with the first team. It's a pleasure to coach a talent like him."
Spain or Morocco?
Born in Fuenlabrada, in the Madrid region, and grew up fully immersed in the local game, progressing through youth setups before joining Real Madrid's renowned youth academy.
He possesses both Spanish and Moroccan nationality, offering him the option to play for both nations at the highest level.
According to Fifa eligibility rules, footballers may represent different countries at youth level without being permanently tied, with the ultimate choice only final once they play in a official senior international match.
He has featured for Spain at underage levels, turning out for both the U19 and under-20 teams, and took part in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where Spain made it to the last eight.
Despite this, he has yet to commit to any full national side, who are monitoring his progress with keen attention.
Speaking recently, the player said: "I have not taken my ultimate choice so far. Things are great with Spain, but I'll make a conclusion in the near future."
This scenario mirrors that of other bi-national talents such as Real team-mate Brahim Diaz and Barca star Yamal. While 18-year-old Yamal chose Spain, Brahim opted to play for Morocco.
Focus on the Future
At present, his attention is on establishing himself in the Real side and repaying his manager's belief.
He featured for 74 minutes in the 2-1 victory at the Etihad, which completed a five-one aggregate success and a quarter-final matchup with Bayern Munich.
His substitution by another academy player in Manuel Angel to emphasise Arbeloa's trust in younger players to aid the club chase future success.
After his notable contributions so far on the Champions League, the midfielder is tipped to be a central figure in that.
"Arbeloa handles me the identical way. We handle it very normally. I try not to think about it excessively - I have to deserve my minutes on the pitch," he commented after the success at Etihad Stadium.
