Two Separate Cuba-bound Aid Ships Reported Missing subsequent to Leaving Mexican Waters.
A comprehensive rescue and recovery mission is currently in progress in the Caribbean region for a pair of lost sailboats transporting relief goods traveling from Mexico to Cuba.
Naval Rescue Operations Initiated
Authorities in Mexico has dispatched naval teams and military search aircraft to locate the Friendship and Tigger Moth, which were transporting a minimum of nine total crew members, according to a navy statement.
The ships had been expected to reach Havana on the early part of the week, but there has been radio silence from them and no confirmation of their arrival, authorities reported.
The Situation of Aid to Cuba
Cuba has depended significantly on aid convoys from Mexico over the past few weeks, as the country struggles through repeated nationwide blackouts.
"The crews and captains are seasoned mariners, and each boat are fitted with appropriate safety equipment and communication devices," a representative associated with the mission said.
The nine individuals on board are from Poland, France, Cuba and the US. Mexico said it has been in touch with coast guard agencies from the involved countries along with their diplomatic representatives.
"We are collaborating completely with the officials and are still optimistic in the ability of the crews to safely arrive in Havana," the spokesperson added.
Recent Relief Delivery
Earlier in the week, the Cuban government widely celebrated and greeted with fanfare another boat that had delivered a significant amount of donated goods to the country.
That ship, nicknamed "Granma 2.0" in reference to the yacht in which the revolutionary leader came back to Cuba to launch the Cuban Revolution in the mid-20th century, delivered solar equipment, drugs, infant formula, cycles and foodstuffs.
Broader International Context
Non-governmental organizations and volunteers have primarily led attempts to ship critical assistance to Cuba since January, a period which saw a energy blockade on the island nation came into effect.
Global bodies have since warned of "dire" shortages of supplies, with more than 50k surgeries postponed in Cuba because of power shortages.
Foreign policy measures have increased lately, with comments from different representatives emphasizing the delicate nature of diplomatic ties.
Responding to certain comments, a prominent Cuban official insisted that "the political system of Cuba is not up for negotiation."
Reports suggest that early stages of negotiations were initiated, although their current progress remains not publicly known.
The naval forces stated it was dedicated to using all of the resources at its reach to find the vessels and secure the security of the people on board.
To date, there has been silence on the missing boats by the government in Havana.
