UN:Me: A Psychological Horror That Blends Survival Horror and Social Deduction Gameplay
The recent Day of the Devs digital showcase unveiled a number of fascinating future games, but one in particular has seized the imagination: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo experience appears to blend the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill game with the suspicion-driven heart of Among Us.
"It's a distinctive game where a young woman containing several personalities within her must escape from a labyrinth of the mind," states producer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Fractured Mind
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed heroine who appears to be of high school age. Inside her exist four distinct personas, all possessing unique anxieties and drives. These souls can seize control spontaneously, releasing their deep-seated phobias upon her suddenly.
Based on showcased gameplay, much of the narrative unfolds within a creepy medical facility, though other scenes depict the protagonist exploring a desolate church.
A World of Individual Dread
"What are you fearful of? What makes you uneasy?" poses game director Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Confined spaces. People in power. Things that appear minor to other people can activate something primal inside us. This game delves into that concept — anxieties that are unique to each person."
The core gameplay loop revolves around controlling whichever soul emerges at any given moment. However, these souls will switch involuntarily during gameplay. During exploration, every persona's anxieties become amplified and attack the girl one after another. When the soul shifts, so does the particular terror the player encounters.
Eerie Aesthetics and a Deadly Choice
Initially, UN:Me shares noticeable aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill series. The hospital is populated by nurses who all share the identical visage, with disturbingly broad grins. Patients in the lobby have large blooms growing from their heads are. Floral motifs are a recurring theme, contrasting natural beauty with supernatural dread.
Yet, UN:Me presents a singular twist. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four souls haunting the heroine is the "real" one. "All four souls asserts that the body is rightfully them," notes a developer. "Throughout the game, you must determine who is authentic."
Once players have deduced a persona is fake, they are forced to destroy it. However, because every entity can lie or hide the reality, it is incredibly simple to choose incorrectly.
"Maybe you've already eliminated the real [soul] by your own actions," a voice suggests. "The last one remaining might be a fraud. Either way, your decisions are irreversible."
UN:Me does not yet have a publicly announced launch window, but it is available to wishlist on digital storefronts.
